The Blood of Dawnwalker Day and Night in Vale Sangora
Human kit at noon. Vampire kit after dusk. The same valley, two games.
Coen is a Dawnwalker: sunlight does not burn him, but dusk still grows claws. That is not a costume change. Daylight opens witchcraft, conversation, and the sword. Night opens traversal, stealth, and a hunger that can murder the person you came to save. The time system decides how many of each you can afford. This page decides which kit a job actually wants. Feeding is the night bar you cannot ignore just because the hourglass is empty.
Rebel Wolves split the kits so you cannot mash both fantasies at once. Anca’s runes are carved into Coen’s arm. They work while the scars are open. At night the wounds heal, which is why hexes go inert. Vampire powers do the reverse: they exist after dusk and lock when the sun comes up. Swordmastery is the overlap — steel works at noon and midnight, which is why it is the tree you can always press.
Daytime kit — talk, steel, and scars
By day you are a villager with a sword and a handful of expensive hexes. NPCs will speak to a man. They will not speak the same way to a monster. Investigations, bargains, and Compel Soul (questioning the dead) are daylight tools. If a quest is a conversation tree, wait for morning even if the shrine is 40 metres away at 2 a.m.
Combat is directional swordplay. You still have to parry arrows. You still fill activation charges: red for hexes, gold for physicals such as Acrid Dust / Dirty Trick and Artery Attack. Health does not regenerate in daylight. Eat. Drink. Do not assume a pause in the fight will refill the bar. The combat guide is the mechanical page; the daytime rule is simpler: every scrape is a consumable until dusk.
Witchcraft is the day tree — about 31 nodes, 21 perks and 10 actives. Openers worth a shrine segment:
- Mercurial Fervour — speed hex. There are no horses. This is how you cross Vale Sangora at noon.
- Acrid Dust (Dirty Trick) — gold physical stun. Opens a pack so directional swings can land.
- Ravenous Flock — cone of birds, damage plus stun. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz’s advice is to keep hurting the marked target so the flock keeps splashing the pack.
- Burning Blood — damage over time. Pairs with the flock.
- Compel Soul — interrogate the dead instead of wandering.
- Astral Communion, Life Lock, Soul Reaping — defense, reflect, and drain. Slot them when a duel is the job, not a rooftop.
Hexes spend health or charges depending on the node. Early health bars are thin. Do not dump three hexes into a goat path ambush. Rank the tree on the Witchcraft page and lock the loadout in the build planner.
Pearly and Precious is a daytime errand that introduces a sanzhana — the “pixie” — and is a clean place to try Ravenous Flock and Mercurial Fervour without a city-scale infamy risk.
Night kit — claws, roofs, and hunger
After dusk the scars close. Hexes stop. Claws come out. You can still draw a sword, and directional combat still applies, but the fantasy is vertical and hungry.
- Shadowstep — short teleport with a landing marker. Dishonored’s Blink family, used for galleries, alleys, and opening a fight on a throat.
- Planeshift — walls and ceilings. Cathedral interiors that are jokes at noon become routes.
- Voracious Bite — feed, damage, health. Vampire abilities skip the activation-charge meter.
- Piercing Shriek — stun and debuff, a disengage when the alley is too full.
- Blood Surge, Shadow Storm — explode a target, slow a fight. Ultimates, not openers.
- Death from Above — the drop from a ledge onto a skull. Scout the gallery in the day; spend the night using it.
- Wolf perk — faster night travel. Buy this before another damage node if you still walk everywhere.
Stealth against guards and civilians is a night skill. A public feed is infamy. Infamy becomes edicts and curfews, which rewrites Svartrau on the map. If you need a human conversation at dawn, do not paint the square at midnight.
Hunger is the night fail state that does not care about your hourglass. Animals work. Human blood works better. If you starve Coen, he can lose control and kill the nearest NPC, including a quest giver. Feed on the road, then talk. Details sit on the feeding page because that bar has ended more preview stories than Brencis has.
Night health recovers by drinking, not by bread. Daytime food is useless after dusk. Swap your inventory brain when the sky changes.
Which kit for which job
| Job type | Kit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Village talk, bargains, investigations | Day | People answer a man. Compel Soul is a day hex. |
| Locked galleries, cathedral roofs, castle walls | Night | Shadowstep, Planeshift, Death from Above. |
| Officer warehouses (Ambrus) | Either | Day for ledgers and lies; night for theft. |
| Open war camps (Bakir) | Either, steel first | Swordmastery plus stamina. |
| Ritual sites (Xanthe) | Split | Day to learn the hex; night if the floor is vertical. |
| Greifberg assault | Both | Day for prep and allies; night for the walls. |
Do not start a two-segment day quest at twilight. Do not start a roof infiltration at 10 in the morning because you are standing next to the cathedral. The time planner is how you schedule kits, not just dates.
People change with the light
Coen is still Coen, but NPCs are not required to be kind to the claws. Anca already knows what she carved. Lacra has her own mission and may prefer a warrior who shows up in daylight. Marat’s rebellion is human politics; a blood-soaked arrival is a different speech. Romance spends time and still cares which face you wear to the meeting. Read allies before you assume a companion quest is kit-agnostic.
The vampire court owns the night in a political sense even when you own it in a traversal sense. Patrols thicken after edicts. Curfews close the routes Shadowstep wanted. Infamy is how you accidentally play a harder map.
Practical habits
- Before you accept a quest, ask which kit it needs. If the hourglass is daytime and you are already in claws, sleep or wait.
- Fill hunger before conversations, not after.
- Buy traversal (Mercurial Fervour, Shadowstep range, wolf) before vanity damage. The Vampirism page ranks night movement.
- Confirm night binds — Shadowstep, bite, shriek — in controls so you do not eat a civilian because bite and interact share a panic press.
- Use scout towers in the day so night routes are already marked. The valley is small; getting lost is a kit mistake, not a size problem.
Getting Started is the first dusk. How to Play is the weekly loop. This page is the reason those two pages keep telling you to wait for the sun.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I use hexes at night?
No. Anca's rune scars heal after dusk, so Witchcraft goes inert. Vampire powers lock at dawn. Swordmastery is the overlap. See the Witchcraft and Vampirism trees.
Does health regenerate during the day?
No. Daytime health is consumables. Night health is blood. Mixing those habits is how you die on a free walk.
Is night just better traversal?
Should I wait for dusk to enter Svartrau?
For roofs and galleries, yes. For merchants, investigations, and hex manuals, no. Split the city across a day and a night instead of forcing one kit.
What is Mercurial Fervour for?
Daytime speed. There are no horses. It is the hex that makes the free part of the time system actually feel free.
Do companions care whether I arrive by day or night?
Often. Human politics wants a man at the table. Night arrivals read as a threat. Check allies before you Shadowstep into a meeting.
