The Blood of Dawnwalker Wayside shrines in Vale Sangora
About 45 benches. Travel is free. Leveling is not. Waiting skips time on purpose.
Wayside shrines are the spine of movement in The Blood of Dawnwalker. There are about 45 of them across Vale Sangora, the 1347 Carpathian pocket that holds Laslea, Svartrau, Greifberg Castle, Maragir, Briar Sloughs, and Shrike’s Crag. A restored shrine is fast travel, a stash, a wait bench, and the only place you buy skill ranks. Fast travel does not spend time. Walking to the shrine does not spend time. Unlocking the travel point does not spend time. Leveling a perk does. Waiting at a restored shrine skips time on purpose. If you treat every glowing node as a free lunch, the time system will bill you in the same currency as a story beat.
This page is the shrine loop. Pair it with the map so you know which bowl of the valley you are standing in, and with Quests and First Week so you do not restore a bench and then spend the week inside its menu. The official console footage above is the world those benches sit in, not a UI lecture.
What a shrine actually does
| Action | Spends a segment? |
|---|---|
| Discover / restore the travel point | No |
| Fast travel between restored shrines | No |
| Open stash / storage | No |
| Wait at a restored shrine (skip clock) | Yes — that is the point of waiting |
| Unlock a skill or perk rank | Yes — XP plus a segment |
| Mercurial Fervour / Shapeshift after prologue | Skill point, no time |
The exception on haste is real. After the Laslea mine, Mercurial Fervour (day witchcraft speed) and Shapeshift / wolf (night vampirism speed) cost a skill point and no hourglass. Shapeshift still needs corruption 1 from Voracious Bite; animals are enough. Every other rank at the bench competes with Coen’s family clock. Use the build planner and the ability tier list before you confirm. Witchcraft is day. Swordmastery is always. Vampirism is night. Buying a claw node at 11 in the morning is how you own a power you cannot press until dusk.
Storage is the quiet feature. Dump junk before a climb or a mill fight so you are not encumbered when you need to run. Fast travel is how a death in Svartrau is a walk from a bench instead of a hike from Laslea Glen. There are no horses. Eleven scouting towers reveal icons; climb them so the next shrine is a mark, not a rumour.
Destroyed shrines: Focus, footprints, heart, return
Many shrines start destroyed. The restore loop is consistent:
- Enter Focus Mode at the ruin.
- Follow the footprints.
- Kill the guards who took the site.
- Take the shrine heart.
- Return and seat the heart.
That investigation is exploration. It does not tick the clock the way a marked quest does. The fight in the middle is still a fight: directional attacks and parries, omni-assists if you need them, four difficulties if a pack is too loud. Read combat if the guards are teaching you yellow arrows the hard way. Feed before you talk to anyone standing next to the restored bench — feeding can still snap Coen on a free walk. Day and night decides whether you restore at noon with a sword or after dusk with claws. The shrine does not care. The kit does.
Do not restore a shrine and then immediately dump three perk ranks because the menu is open. Unlocking travel is the win. Leveling is a second decision. In the prologue walkthrough the rule is stricter: do not buy time-costing shrine perks before the Blood Mass. Those pips belong to Esme and the pew. After Smoke and Ashes, cap early ranks the way the time planner already tells you: one segment a day in week one, haste nodes first because they are free.
Named benches worth finding early
This wiki will not invent a 45-name list. It will name the four pins that keep showing up in the first week:
- Laslea Centre — village hub. The Firebrand’s ruined house sits behind a yellow banner north of this shrine. Restore it before you wander. Fast travel home is how Deep Down and the mill stay cheap in real-world minutes.
- Anca’s Hut — Anca is the healer who carves hex runes. A bench near her hut is a stash for manuals and a wait if you need daylight for Compel Soul. Do not starve in her doorway.
- Silver Mines — Coen’s workplace and the Bad Blood geography. Useful once the 30-day clock is running and you need a south-of-Laslea travel point that is not the mill itself.
- Blackwater Hollow — a named hollow on the way into wilder ground. Restore it when a tower paints it. Do not walk past a destroyed heart because the main pin is further on.
Svartrau, Greifberg, Maragir, Briar Sloughs, and Shrike’s Crag each want their own benches before you pick a fight with Ambrus’s warehouses, Bakir’s camps, or Xanthe’s ritual ground. Brencis does not care that you travelled for free. He cares that you arrived late because you ranked a third stamina node at the wrong hut.
Waiting, skipping, and why travel is not a cheat
Waiting at a restored shrine is how you skip to the kit a job wants. A conversation in Laslea wants day. A Curious House in Svartrau for Tiny Dancer wants night. The time system will charge you for that skip because you asked the sun to move. Fast travel will not. That distinction is the design: Rebel Wolves let you cross the pocket kingdom without a horse, then tax the moments that change the plot or the build.
If you need extra calendar, Sanzhana quests can grant time. Named pins live on the quests page (Good Home, Tiny Dancer). Shrines will not print extra days by themselves. If the 30-day family clock empties, the campaign continues on a different branch; endings maps that door. A shrine wait cannot replace a coronation buffer.
Collectibles and lore sit in the same landscape as these benches. Do not spend a segment on a rank you will not press this week just because a collectible walk ended at a menu. How to Play and Getting Started still apply: exploration is free, hourglasses are not. Restore the heart. Travel for nothing. Pay for the node only when the build planner says it fires in the current half of the clock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does fast travel spend hourglass time?
No. Fast travel between restored shrines is free. Walking, looting, and opening the map are free. Leveling a skill at the shrine costs a segment. Waiting skips time on purpose.
How do I restore a destroyed shrine?
Focus Mode, follow footprints, kill the guards, take the shrine heart, return it. Unlocking the travel point does not spend a segment. About 45 shrines exist in the valley.
Can I wait at a shrine to change day and night?
Yes, at a restored shrine. That skip is the reason wait exists. Use it when a job wants the other kit. See day and night.
Should I buy perks at the first Laslea shrine?
Not in the prologue. After Smoke and Ashes, haste nodes (Mercurial Fervour, Shapeshift) cost a skill point and no time. Other ranks still cost a segment. Use the build planner.
Where is the Laslea Centre shrine?
In the village hub. The Firebrand's ruined house is behind a yellow banner north of it. Restore Laslea Centre, Anca's Hut, Silver Mines, and Blackwater Hollow as you reach them.
Are shrines the same as scouting towers?
No. Eleven towers reveal map icons. Shrines are travel, stash, wait, and skills. Climb towers so the next shrine is marked. Geography sits on the map.
