The Blood of Dawnwalker Vampire Powers and Night Traversal

Night is not a lighting filter. Claws, teleports, and vertical routes replace the sword when dusk falls.

Vampire Powers and Traversal

Night transforms Coen from a swordsman into something the vampire court did not anticipate. When Anca’s rune scars heal at dusk, the Witchcraft hexes go dormant. In their place: claws, Shadowstep, Planeshift, and a hunger that can end quests without spending a single hourglass segment. This page is the night kit. Read day and night for the switchover logic and feeding before you let Coen starve in front of a quest giver.

The official Bandai Namco gameplay overview (above) shows the traversal toolkit in action. Rebel Wolves confirmed that Shadowstep and Planeshift are the primary navigation tools at night — not fast travel, not horses, but the wall beside the cathedral you climbed in daylight that is now a highway.

Shadowstep — short teleport combat and route

Shadowstep is the signature night ability. Press it and a marker lands where Coen will blink: a short-range teleport that works in combat and in traversal. IGN First hands-on footage shows it used to close distance, escape a combo, and clip through a locked door by blinking past it. The marker is visible to Coen; enemies see the arrival flash.

Combat uses for Shadowstep:

  • Open on a throat: blink behind a Blood Guard before they turn
  • Escape a combo: step out of a corner before the third hit lands
  • Clip the arena: blink past a barrier that should block the path

Traversal uses for Shadowstep:

  • Skip a locked gate by blinking to the far side
  • Cross a courtyard without crossing the patrol
  • Reach a gallery that requires a running start in daylight

Shadowstep range is short — not a fast-travel replacement. The Vampirism tree ranks upgrades that extend the blink distance and reduce the cooldown. Buy range before you buy a second attack node if traversal is the problem.

Planeshift — walls, ceilings, and cathedral routes

Planeshift is Shadowstep’s vertical sibling. Where Shadowstep goes forward, Planeshift goes up. Wall-running lets Coen scale surfaces that daylight movement cannot touch. Cathedral interiors that are locked at noon become open highways after curfew.

IGN First footage shows Planeshift used on ruined monastery walls — Coen runs up what looks like a 45-degree slope, hits a window, and clips inside. The same route in daylight would require a key, a lockpick minigame, or a door that does not exist.

Practical Planeshift routes:

  • Svartrau cathedral: run the exterior wall to the gallery entrance
  • Maragir monastery: scale the bell tower without the front door
  • Greifberg Castle walls: approach the battlements before the courtyard alert

Planeshift stamina cost is real. The wolf perk (faster night travel) and Mercurial Fervour (daytime speed) are traversal purchases that reduce the real-world time spent moving. The time system does not charge for movement, but your patience is not infinite.

Voracious Bite — heal, feed, and the charge skip

Voracious Bite is the night heal. Press it during combat and Coen bites the target: damage dealt, health restored, hunger satisfied. Unlike Witchcraft hexes, vampire powers skip the red/gold activation charge meter entirely. Night fights are not starved by a missing resource — they are starved by hunger management.

The feeding page has the full loop: animals are safe, civilians raise infamy, and starving Coen can kill the NPC standing in front of him. Bite is the tool that makes a hunt productive instead of destructive.

Bite upgrades on the Vampirism tree increase healing, reduce corruption gain, and unlock the ability to feed without killing. The choice of how much blood to take — leaving a target unconscious or dead — affects quests and infamy differently.

Piercing Shriek and Shadow Storm — room control

Piercing Shriek is a stun and debuff. It wakes rooms, scatters packs, and buys breathing space when the alley has too many bodies. Shadow Storm slows time so claw strings actually land on enemies who would otherwise dodge or trade.

Both are ultimates in practice, not openers. The opening sequence for a night brawl is:

  1. Death from Above — drop from height onto a priority target
  2. Voracious Bite — heal as the fight starts
  3. Piercing Shriek — scatter reinforcements
  4. Claw string — directional combat with claws instead of a sword
  5. Shadow Storm — if the room is still full and the corruption tax is worth it

Scout a room in daylight. Mark the gallery. Return at night and drop. Death from Above multiplies the first hit on a target below Coen’s falling weight. It is the night opener that turns a stealth approach into a guaranteed opening kill.

The map page has the vertical geography: which buildings have accessible roofs, which alleys have overhanging galleries, which towers have sight lines that make the drop worth the climb.

Wolf perk — faster night travel

The wolf perk does not make Coen a werewolf. It makes him faster at night: higher movement speed, better traversal across rough terrain. If the complaint is that walking everywhere takes too long, the wolf perk is the answer even though it is not the answer to combat.

Buy it before a second damage node if night navigation is the bottleneck. The Vampirism page has the full tree with rankings.

What works and what does not at night

Witchcraft is off. The rune scars heal; hexes go dormant. Swordmastery still works — steel is not sun-gated — but the night kit wants claws and teleports, not a directional sword fight on flat ground.

The combat guide has the full directional claw system. The summary: night fights should start already won or already on a wall. Shadowstep in, bite the priority target, shriek the reinforcements, claw your way out.

Infamy is still live. A messy public feed in Svartrau produces edicts the same way it does in daylight. The map remembers what you did to the patrol.

Getting Started puts you in Laslea at dusk on night one. This page is why that dusk is not a death sentence.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I use Shadowstep in combat?

Yes. Shadowstep is a short-range teleport with a visible landing marker. Use it to close distance, escape combos, or clip past barriers. The Vampirism tree ranks upgrades that extend range and reduce cooldown.

What is Planeshift versus Shadowstep?

Shadowstep goes forward — a short blink for combat and horizontal routes. Planeshift goes vertical — wall-running and ceiling traversal for cathedral interiors and castle battlements that daylight cannot reach.

Does Voracious Bite use the charge meter?

No. Vampire powers skip the red/gold activation charge meter entirely. Night healing comes from blood, not charges. Animals are safe; humans raise infamy. Starving Coen can kill the nearest NPC.

What is the night combat opener?

Death from Above for a guaranteed first hit, Voracious Bite to heal as fighting starts, Piercing Shriek to scatter reinforcements, then directional claw combat. Shadow Storm is for when the room is still full.

Can I use Witchcraft at night?

No. Anca's rune scars heal at dusk; Witchcraft hexes go dormant until dawn. Swordmastery still works. The Vampirism tree is the night kit. See day and night.

Does feeding at night raise infamy?

Yes. Public human feeding raises infamy the same way it does in daylight. Animals are safe. Civilians are not. A messy feed in Svartrau produces edicts and curfews. See feeding.
