The Blood of Dawnwalker Human versus Vampire: Day and Night Kits Compared
Same hero, different tools. The hourglass decides which half of Coen you build.
Coen is one character with two toolkits. Daylight opens Witchcraft and conversation. Night opens claws and cathedral ceilings. Swordmastery works in both. This page is the direct comparison so you can decide which half of the clock to fund with shrine segments and skill points. Day and night has the full loop. Getting Started puts both kits on the night-one checklist.
The IGN First footage above shows the Laslea prologue in daylight — investigation, directional sword combat, and the human kit before dusk changes everything.
Daylight kit — Witchcraft and the sword
By day Coen is a man with a sword and Anca’s carved runes. NPCs treat him as human. Witchcraft hexes are active. The charge meter — red for hexes, gold for physicals — is the resource.
What daylight gives you:
- Full Witchcraft tree: Ravenous Flock, Burning Blood, Life Lock, Acrid Dust, Mercurial Fervour, Compel Soul, Soul Reaping, Astral Communion
- Human conversation: NPCs respond to Coen as a man, not as a predator
- Investigations: Compel Soul works on corpses; dialogue trees that close for monsters stay open
- Swordmastery active: directional steel works at noon and midnight
- Health management: consumables and food; no natural regeneration in daylight
What daylight denies you:
- Claws, Shadowstep, Planeshift
- Night traversal and stealth feeding routes
- The vampire heal (Voracious Bite)
Night kit — claws and cathedral routes
After dusk the scars heal, hexes go dormant, and the vampire kit comes online. NPCs who notice Coen may react differently. Claws and teleports replace the hex toolkit.
What night gives you:
- Full Vampirism tree: Voracious Bite, Shadowstep, Planeshift, Piercing Shriek, Blood Surge, Shadow Storm, Death from Above, wolf perk
- Vertical routes: wall-running, ceiling traversal, gallery drops
- Vampire heal: bite instead of consumables
- Stealth: Shadowstep to bypass patrols; silent movement on walls
- Corruption progression: feeding raises the gate that unlocks deep Vampirism
What night denies you:
- Witchcraft hexes (scars are closed)
- Human conversation with some NPCs
- The ability to enter some buildings that require daylight access
Swordmastery — the bridge between both
Swordmastery is the only tree that works in both halves of the clock. Acrid Dust, Artery Attack, Charge, and the stamina tree are available at noon and midnight. This is why it is the tree you can always justify: it does not get turned off.
The combat guide has the full directional steel system. The summary: directional combat applies in both forms. Claws still read as four-directional attacks; the sword still reads as four-directional blocks. The kit changes the buttons, not the geometry.
Health rules flip at dusk
Daylight: health does not regenerate. Use consumables.
Night: Voracious Bite is the heal. Daytime food does not solve night health.
This is not cosmetic. It is a gear check. If Coen enters the night at low health with no animals nearby, the next fight is a Voracious Bite or a reload.
The feeding page has the loop. The habit: check hunger before the quest log when dusk arrives.
Which kit for which job
| Situation | Preferred kit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| NPCs, dialogue, investigations | Day | Human response; Compel Soul active |
| Locked cathedral interiors | Night | Planeshift walls; Shadowstep past doors |
| Open combat in daylight | Day | Full hex kit; gold charge executions |
| Stealth raid on a patrol | Night | Shadowstep bypass; silent wall movement |
| Against Blood Guard pack | Either | Swordmastery bridges both; pick based on other factors |
| Feeding before a conversation | Night | Animals; or bite the guard before talking |
| Boss fight | Both | Day for hex and steel; night for claws and traversal |
The calendar consequence
The time system charges for shrine levels. If Coen spends ten segments on Witchcraft nodes, those segments are not spent on Vampirism nodes. The shared skill point pool makes the choice real: you cannot finish both trees in 30 days.
The build planner is the honest planning document. It stops you from buying a night-only node on a morning that still needs hexes.
Practical opening habits
- Scout towers in daylight so night routes are already marked on the map
- Feed before conversations, not after
- Buy traversal (Mercurial Fervour day, Shadowstep night) before vanity damage
- Confirm bite and Shadowstep binds in controls so panic presses do not feed civilians
- Switch inventory brain at dusk: consumables for day, blood for night
Getting Started is the first dusk. Combat is the fight system that works in both. This page is why those two pages keep telling you to check which kit the job wants.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can Coen use Witchcraft and Vampirism at the same time?
No. The rune scars heal at dusk; Witchcraft goes dormant. Vampire powers lock at dawn. Swordmastery works in both. That is why it is the tree you can always justify.
Does health regenerate differently in each form?
Yes. Daylight: no regeneration, use consumables. Night: Voracious Bite is the heal. Daytime food does not work at night. Swap your inventory habits when the sky changes.
Which NPCs respond to Coen differently at night?
Most NPCs treat Coen as human by day. At night some may notice the claws or smell. The practical rule: feed before conversations, especially with quest givers. See feeding.
Can I finish both Witchcraft and Vampirism in one 30-day run?
No. Skill points are shared. Corruption gates the deep Vampirism tree. Shrine leveling costs time segments. The calendar will not fund a completionist tree. Use the build planner.
Which kit should I prioritize for a first playthrough?
One Witchcraft stun or flock, one Swordmastery staple, one Vampirism traversal node (Shadowstep or wolf perk). Steel is the bridge; hexes are the day power; claws are the night power. Do not buy a night node on a morning that still needs hexes.
Do claws use the same directional combat as the sword?
Yes. Directional combat applies in both forms. The kit changes the buttons — claws instead of sword — not the geometry. The combat guide covers both.
